Stay-at-Home Orders Are Easing; Make Sure Your Battery Doesn’t Keep You Quarantined

These are unprecedented times, as the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has forced many individuals across the nation to quarantine at home. With businesses closed and events cancelled, many people are finding themselves with an abundant amount of extra time. And with the weather finally starting to warm up, it’s the perfect opportunity to devote some hours in the garage to check in on your vehicle. Believe it or not, the lack of on-road activity from having no place to go, can actually have an impact on your car’s battery performance the next time you try and turn the key. Here are a few simple, at-home, maintenance tips to ensure your vehicle is in great condition when the time is right to get back on the road again.

  1. Check under the hood. Corroded or loose battery connections can prevent the charging system from topping off your battery when you are ready to start driving again. If you notice blue or green growths hanging off your battery terminals or something that resembles a thin white powdery substance, that’s a sure sign that your battery is being damaged by corrosion. Keeping batteries clean and mounted securely can go a long way to ensuring the maximum life of your battery.
  2. Disconnect the battery while not in use or use a trickle charger. This will keep onboard accessories, such as the radio and other electronic components, from draining the battery while it is not in operation. A trickle charger will also do the trick, keeping the battery charged and the fluids circulating, despite the fact your vehicle sits idle.
  3. Check your battery’s “birthdays”. Time eventually takes its toll on batteries, regardless of the battery chemistry. The average car battery can last between 3-5 years, depending on application and environmental factors. It might be time to make a new purchase.

Unlike conventional flooded lead acid batteries, ODYSSEY® batteries with Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) technology have a slow discharge rate and provide deep-cycle reserve power to handle constant drains without permanent damage.   They feature a three- to ten-year service life and a two-year storage life at 77°F (25°C). Always be sure to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for battery care and handling and direct any questions to your battery professional.
